Trick or Treat - Embrace Your Alter Ego

What’s in a name and what does it say about you? When people hear your name, do you think they form opinions? I would say YES! Deep beneath the surface in the shadows lies our alter ego. What is that? Do you ever dream of releasing that inner wild child, the woman you witness in the club letting go and having FUN all on her own? The vixen…the cat woman who is free to be who she is and relinquishes the judgment from others and within. What’s her name? Your alter ego. Mine = Dominique. Wait, though. Have you ever stopped to ponder this concept? Breathe. Well, I have a story for you!

I think you know this about me, but I truly welcome the most interesting conversations into my vortex, especially over the last few years. If you show up authentically, others will, too.  So, give yourself permission. I promise you it's a gift.

While dropping my daughter off for her second year of college in Ohio (yes, I have been processing this for a while since she is in her third year lol.), I visited a quaint hotel bar with maybe six spots. I was presented with an opportunity to get to know another life story which you know I love. The bartenders and I started to discuss this research study from the CIA, which covered the different types of personalities. I think you know, as a transformational coach, I am certified in many personality profile assessments so this was fun and juicy for me. I was all IN. Yes, people definitely have their hidden lives, even if it is merely a TV show they watch or perhaps even an alter ego. This led to a discussion on our alter egos: "What? You can’t hide it now….spit it out!”

Landon’s alter ego was Lamont, and Justin’s was Jake. I’ve always believed in allowing yourself to express your first thought without filtering, blurting if you will, so I told them my alter ego was Dominique, but in this case, I feel like I need to stay with the alliterations, so I say Michelle Monique.

During this time, another man came to sit down at the bar, intrigued by our conversation's playfulness and wanting to participate. His name was Jake, but his alter ego was Big Daddy. In unison, we said, “ Oh, well, OK.” In my mind, not blurting this time lol, I thought now that's a coaching session. Incidentally, this was a great excercise in my MembHership community. It was an entertaining and lively conversation during our power hour!  Clearly, bringing them alive!

The point of this anecdote is that we all have a secret persona or person who is dying to come out and be seen if only the eye could release judgment and approval, love ourselves enough, and release societal expectations. They can help you break through fears, build confidence, and connect more deeply with others.

It's no wonder why so many people feel comfortable dressing up as "others" on Halloween and being seen as perhaps their alter ego. It's an acceptable time to play with an alternative identity or persona.

I am Michelle and Monique, and I’m the balance of the two. Monique seems sexy, mysterious, and profound, and full of intrigue. French, well, maybe that is one thing I am not— Mexican, yes, but French, no. She also seems FREE with her thoughts, actions, and needs.

Our alter egos allow us to explore different aspects of ourselves. They remind us that we don’t have to fit into one mold or live by one set of rules. Whether on the dance floor or during moments of quiet reflection, embracing these hidden parts of ourselves can be liberating.

So go ahead, step out, dress up, and step on in. It’s Halloween, so what better time than to think about your future self, alter ego, or fantasy person? Maybe it really is you—embody her!

Be well. Do well.

All my best,
